An Arizona prosecutor revealed that a man arrested in connection with the shooting of a Democratic National Committee office in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix, had an extensive arsenal in his possession. The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Michael Kelly, was found to have over 120 guns and more than 250,000 rounds of ammunition at his residence. Additionally, scopes, body armor, silencers, and a machine gun were among the items seized by law enforcement.
Authorities expressed concerns that the size of the cache indicated potential plans for a mass casualty event. The prosecutor stated that federal agents informed her about the significant seizure made following Kelly's arrest.
Kelly, aged 60, allegedly targeted the Arizona Democrats' field office by firing BB pellets and gunshots at the building's glass front door and window. Three .22-caliber bullet casings were discovered in Kelly's trash during a search.
No individuals were present during the incidents that occurred on September 16, 23, and October 6. Kelly faces multiple charges, including acts of terrorism, related to the shootings and other offenses.
In a separate incident, Kelly was accused of hanging political signs lined with razor blades in Ahwatukee, a Phoenix suburb known for its Democratic-leaning voter base. The signs also contained plastic bags labeled as 'biohazard' with white powder inside.
His defense attorney described Kelly as a retired aerospace engineer with no criminal record and emphasized that he was not a flight risk. Despite this, a $500,000 cash bond was set, along with requirements for house arrest and an ankle monitor if Kelly is able to post bail.
The targeted field office in Tempe was one of 18 locations in Arizona where Democrats gathered to support Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign efforts. Following the incidents, the office was closed for safety reasons.
Kelly's next court appearance is scheduled for October 29 in Maricopa County Superior Court. The case has drawn attention in the context of the intense political competition in Arizona between Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Political violence has marred the campaign season, with incidents targeting both major party candidates. The situation underscores the importance of vigilance and security measures in the current political climate.
