Arizona investigators have arrested a man accused of shooting at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) office in Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix. The suspect, Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, was placed under surveillance by authorities after receiving tips from the public.
According to Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy, Kelly was observed posting political signs with bags of a white, powdery substance attached to them. He was arrested on three felony counts of acts of terrorism and four other related charges.
Kelly's alleged actions escalated from firing shots from a BB gun to using real bullets in multiple incidents targeting the DNC office. Surveillance footage captured a silver Toyota SUV leaving the scene after the shootings.
Authorities found over 120 guns and 250,000 rounds of ammunition at Kelly's residence, leading them to believe he may have been planning a mass casualty event. The suspect had previously been under suspicion for the theft of political signs in 2022.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized that political violence and attempts to interfere with elections are unacceptable and will be met with serious legal consequences. The Arizona Democratic Party remains committed to ensuring voter turnout in the East Valley leading up to Election Day.
Chief McCoy reassured the community of their safety during the election period and condemned any form of political violence. The investigation is ongoing to determine if Kelly had any additional plans or accomplices.
Authorities are considering additional charges related to the powdery substance found on the political signs. The incident underscores the importance of upholding democracy and protecting the electoral process from threats and intimidation.
