In exciting news for music and film lovers, Ariana DeBose, Boy George, and Nile Rodgers have joined forces for the disco-infused bop, 'Electric Energy,' featured in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming film, 'Argylle.' The track, produced by Rodgers himself, serves as the end credits song for the film.
Rodgers shared that he received a call from Vaughn, who asked if he wanted to be involved in the project. While a demo track was sent to him initially, Rodgers insisted on watching the film to have a proper context before jumping in blindly. After viewing 'Argylle,' Rodgers expressed how he was instantly sold, saying, 'It was fun. I'm totally down.'
For DeBose, shooting the film came just before her remarkable 2022 awards season sweep, where she won Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'West Side Story.' She shared that after her Oscar win, Vaughn reached out to her, saying, 'So, you won an Oscar. I think we need to do some more with you. Would you like to do a song?' DeBose found it exciting and viewed it as a new challenge in her career.
The version of 'Electric Energy' featured in the film is different from the Boy George and Rodgers mix played during the end credits. DeBose mentioned that Nile Rodgers stepped in and made it funkier, adding an energetic underbelly to the film that furthers the storytelling. The song's retro disco vibe was inspired by disco star Sylvester, with Vaughn and the songwriting team taking cues from his style while writing the lyrics.
Rodgers acknowledged his initial concern about being able to capture the same level of happiness he felt when he first heard the track. He wanted to take it 'one step higher.' Fortunately, he is thrilled with the final results and is proud of the collaboration with DeBose.
To accompany the release of 'Electric Energy,' an all-star cast music video was created, featuring DeBose, along with Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Rodgers himself. DeBose expressed her surprise and excitement when she found out that all her colleagues were involved. She praised Matthew Vaughn's dedication to making the video feel joyful.
When asked about her own musical preferences, DeBose shared a mix of modern and throwback favorites. She enjoys listening to Dove Cameron's 'Lethal Woman' and Cher's 'Chiquitita.' Additionally, classics like Sylvester's 'Do You Want to Funk' and Billy Porter's 'Baby Was A Dancer' are staples in her morning routine, setting the right mood for her day.
'Electric Energy' is now available for streaming, and the accompanying music video can be watched below. The collaboration between Ariana DeBose, Boy George, and Nile Rodgers brings together their unique talents to create an infectious disco anthem that perfectly complements the high-energy world of 'Argylle.'
