Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suspended by FIFA for 'offensive behaviour'

FIFA handed a two-match suspension to Argentina's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for "offensive behaviour" on multiple occasions recently.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the development with a statement, which will now see Martinez sitting out the next two South American FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Venezuela and Bolivia.

"Damian Emiliano Martinez is being held responsible for his offensive behaviour and violation of the principles of fair play," the AFA said in a statement.

However, AFA said it "absolutely disagrees" with the decision.

The goalkeeper made a lewd gesture with a replica of the Copa America trophy during the game against Chile, similar to what he did after Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar two years ago.

It followed another act of misbehaviour, when he hit a television camera after the team's defeat againt Colombia.
