Are there away goals for Man City vs Real Madrid? Champions League semi-final rules explained

Manchester City have their eyes on a second Champions League final when they take on Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The two sides meet at the Etihad in their semi-final second leg with everything to play for after a 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital last week. Pep Guardiola's side are favourites to progress given their enviable home form and the Blues are unbeaten on their own patch in the Champions League in their last 25 matches.

Inter Milan await in the final after beating neighbours AC Milan and the victors of tonight's semi-final will be favourites to lift the trophy. City have yet to win Europe's elite competition, losing their sole final appearance 1-0 to Chelsea in 2021.

Madrid are specialists in this competition and are the current holders having beaten Liverpool a year ago while they also staged a dramatic comeback to knock City out at this stage last season. Ahead of a crucial second leg, we take a look at the key rules for the last four tie.

Are there away goals?

No, there are not. This will be the second consecutive year that European competitions have been played without the 'away goals' ruling and so in the event of a draw after 180 minutes of football, extra-time and penalties will be required.

Can you be suspended for the final?

Yes, but only after receiving a red card. Yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-finals so even if someone is booked in both legs they would not miss the final. But anyone sent off at the Etihad tonight would miss the showpiece if their team progressed

When is the Champions League final?

The finale of the domestic season takes place on Saturday, June 10, with kick-off at 8pm UK time and 10pm local time. The competition showpiece is taking place later than normal due to the winter World Cup in Qatar. Inter Milan have secured their spot in the final after beating City rivals AC Milan 3-0 on aggregate.
