Scottish football is mourning the loss of Andy Goram. Where does he rank in our nation’s list of shot-stoppers?
KEITH JACKSON : At the very top. At his best Goram was a genuine world-class operator capable of making impossible saves. He more than earned his legendary status..
ANDY NEWPORT: He’s the greatest. You only have to look through Goram’s montage of breathtaking stops and the looks of disbelief on the vast number of opposition strikers he defied to realise the extent of his talent.
GORDON PARKS: Only Jim Leighton can rival The Goalie as Scotland’s best ever. It was Goram’s reflexes which gives him the edge and he was also far, far better as a footballer with his feet so he’s the greatest No.1 we’ve had.
Celtic have spent around £17.5m so far this window. Are the Hoops stealing a march on their Ibrox rivals?
KEITH: Yes. Celtic’s ducks are already nicely in a row while Rangers still don’t appear to know if Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo will still be at the club next season.
ANDY: They’re definitely getting their work done early but given CCV and Jota were there last season, it won’t be a vastly different Celtic line-up this time. Rangers need freshening up but they still have four weeks to get deals done before the term starts.
GORDON: It certainly looks like it. Celtic have managed to get the big two over the line with Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers and Rangers are playing catch-up but it’s still early days.
Killie started their pre-season campaign on Friday How will they fare on their return to the top flight?
KEITH: Derek McInnes made his intentions clear when he made the decision to drop into the Championship in the first place. He wants a top-six finish in his first season back in the Premiership and there’s no reason to think it’s beyond him.
ANDY: Keeping a proven scorer in Kyle Lafferty is a major boost for a club whose first priority should be stabilising themselves
back in the Premiership. He could do with a few more additions but McInnes can keep them up.
GORDON: Derek McInnes has now had time to assess the club and squad but he’s still a few players shy of having a side which can make an impact in the Premiership. However, there’s still recruitment to be done in the weeks ahead.
The Scottish Open starts this week. Who are you tipping to go all the way at the Renaissance Club?
KEITH: Scottie Scheffler and Cameron Smith will take some beating but Bob McIntyre might be worth a punt back on home soil. It could be a big summer for the Scot.
ANDY: You’d be as well setting fire to your dough if you’re asking me for tips but Rory McIlroy – fired up by the LIV breakaway furore – seems to be back to his best. He’ll want to continue that run heading into
The Open at St Andrews.
GORDON: Tommy Fleetwood will be worth a flutter and Patrick Cantlay is also a decent shout.
