Are Banks Open on New Year's Eve?

Are banks open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day? This is a question many folks are asking as the turn of the calendar year approaches.

The answer is mixed. Banks are open on New Year's Eve in 2025 because it falls on a Wednesday this year and it is not a federal holiday. However, banks will be closed on Thursday, January 1, in observance of New Year's Day because that is one of several federal holidays in 2026.

As for stock market holidays – particularly for those asking "is the stock market open on New Year's" – the equities market is typically open for regular trading hours on New Year's Eve if it falls on a weekday, as it does this year, while the bond market closes early at 2 pm Eastern Standard Time. Both markets are closed for all of New Year's Day.

For those wondering what time does the market open for regular trading hours, both the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) are open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern time Monday through Friday.

If you're looking to take some time this holiday season to plan for your financial new year, consider taking some of these steps to make your New Year's resolutions stick.

Meanwhile, with tax season quickly approaching, don't forget to check out the newly released standard deduction amounts you can claim on your 2025 and 2026 tax returns.

Below, we feature a full schedule of all U.S. bank holidays for 2026, which coincide with the federal holiday schedule.
