Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit stressed Monday on the importance of all Libyan parties working towards political consensus as the real guarantee of maintaining stability in the country.
An official source at the organization's General Secretariat said that Aboul Gheit underscored the importance of putting the interests of Libya first during this critical stage.
He stressed "the need for the international community to support everything that would strengthen the unity of the Libyan state, maintain stability, and to hold elections that would renew the legitimacy of institutions and reflect the free will of Libyans," the source added.
Libya was plunged in crisis as former interior minister Fathi Bashagha was named prime minister-designate. Head of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah has said he will hand over power only after an election and has rejected Bashagha's designation.
Last week, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said his country supports a "Libyan-Libyan" negotiated political solution.
In a press conference in Cairo with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, Shoukry emphasized that there are no military solutions to the Libyan crisis.
Egypt is communicating with all Libyan parties with the aim of bringing their views closer and ensuring the preservation of the country's security and stability, he said.
