Eastern Kentucky Agritech company AppHarvest has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. Officials filed for protection on Monday. The Morehead Kentucky-based company operates some of the world’s largest high-tech indoor farms to grow what they promoted as affordable, healthy fruits and vegetables.
Kentucky’s governor has often touted AppHarvest as making the commonwealth a leader in the Agri-tech industry.
A statement from the company says they have funding to keep the business running as usual for the next 60 days at three of their facilities in Morehead, Richmond, and Somerset.
Over the next 60 days, officials will be working to sell the farms to investors with the hope that they stay operational and continue to employ about the same number of workers. They hope to move faster with the transfer of ownership with their Berea facility.
AppHarvest currently employs around a thousand people throughout eastern Kentucky.
