Antiques Roadshow guest floored by value of 'tatty' Harry Potter books

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left speechless after two old Harry Potter books were valued at up to £5,000.

The BBC show rolled into Scotland on Sunday night, which saw presenter Fiona Bruce visit Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens as guests brought along antiques and heirlooms.

One guest, Helen, brought along two first edition Harry Potter books - the Philospher's Stone and the Chamber of Secrets. The first book was in extremely poor condition.

Books and manuscript expert Justin Croft said: "Normally, I'd welcome you to the show and thank you for bringing the items. Then I'd comment on them being in good condition... but I can't do that here".

Helen explained she had been given the first Harry Potter book in her stocking one year and read it quickly before passing it on to her siblings. She said the book had been read "many times by multiple people".

But as both books were signed by J K Rowling, Helen was in for a pleasant surprise when it came to the valuation. Justin estimated the first book to be worth between £1,000 and £1,500, while the second - which was in much better condition albeit with its dust cover missing - at up to £3,500.

However, some viewers were unimpressed Harry Potter books are considered "antiques". Taking to Twitter, Gerry Keogh said: "I love Harry Potter but this is the #antiquesroadshow, the clue is in 'antiques'".

Mr Chambers said: "Harry Potter books are not antiques", while David Tully called the books "tatty". Cupie_doll said: "Cannot believe just how valuable signed Harry Potter books are. Astonishing".
