Anticipation as new Nottinghamshire school set to open later this year

Residents on a new housing estate are looking forward to a new primary school opening. The new Millside Spencer Academy building will be opening in East Leake during September 2023 after work started last year, and have enough space for 315 pupils, as well as a 26 place nursery at its site in Rempstone Road.

Pupils are already being educated in a temporary school.

The village has grown in recent years with hundreds of new homes being built at various sites and families moving to the area. Residents say they are looking forward to the school being built, and feel it is needed in the community.

However, some households are concerned that the school would create additional traffic in the area. Finance worker, Adrian Brown, 43, said: “It will be really good for the area as there are so many new builds now and not enough school places at the moment.

"They’ve already put the double yellow lines in to stop parents parking anywhere. They are doing a car park down there as well."

Adrian added: "We haven’t got any concerns at all about it, it will be good. Additional houses are going to be built there as well near the school."

Work has started on the school which is being built on former farming land. It is expected to open for the new academic school year. It was planned in order to fulfil the need created by nearby housing developments, such as The Skylarks estate, and developers previously said it will "satisfy projected demand for primary school places in East Leake".

A 40-year-old mum in the area said: “It’s definitely going to be good for the community I think. The only concerns we have being so close to it is the parking. My children are older so they won’t be using the school. It’s a lot bigger than I thought it would be, but there’s a lot of young families here so that will be great for them."

She added: "I think the school is definitely needed but it’s the health care system for the village that should be a priority." Software engineer Josh Hallam, 31, said: “We haven’t got any concerns and we haven’t got any kids so it makes no difference to us what do ever."

Josh continued: "We’re moving soon to the other side of the estate so it makes no difference to us if there would be any extra traffic to the school or not. There are quite a few kids on this estate though so it would be good for them to have it so close."

A woman who did not wish to be named added: “It will be a fantastic school, it will be great. I think the path for walking on walk stay but the road there is temporary so access isn’t a problem."

The permanent Millside Spencer Academy building is required to be operational for September 2023 in order to continue the education of pupils admitted in September 2022. The plans for the school were submitted last year by the county council.

Pupils are currently taught in a temporary building. East Leake was previously described as a 'small town' because of the various housing developments in the area, and one local councillor said schools were 'full to bursting'.
