Anti-fascist theatre: The story behind Here There Are Blueberries

The cast of Here There Are Blueberries at Stratford East (2026) - (Mark Senior)

Here There Are Blueberries is currently creating a deserved stir at Stratford East after making its off-Broadway premiere in 2024 which brought numerous awards, and a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. Written and directed by Moisés Kaufman (with Amanda Gronich as co-writer), it was developed by his New York experimental theatre company, Tectonic, and is based on the real events sparked when a mysterious album, featuring photographs from Auschwitz of the people who worked there, arrives at the desk of a U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum archivist. As the shocking truth behind the images is unravelled, the fall-out leads to questions around the perpetrators of the Holocaust, and our own humanity in the face of creeping fascism.

It was sparked for the Venezuela-born Kaufman, saw the images from the album in the New York Times, in which happy smiling secretaries at Auschwitz eat blueberries with a Nazi officer.
