Anthropic will offer in-country inference within India, where Claude requests will be processed on Indian servers, allowing data to reside within the region in the coming weeks, the company said on August 3.
Claude will be made available with in-country inference through Amazon Bedrock, an Amazon Web Services platform for building generative AI applications. "Requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint will be processed on servers in India," the company said in a statement.
Both OpenAI and Google offer local data processing in the country.
India is one of the largest markets for the company. This comes on the back of key requests from organizations in India to access Claude locally, the company said. In-country inference refers to the running of Anthropic's Claude models on Indian servers, allowing the data to reside within the country.
This gives Indian organizations the certainty they need to serve customers in highly regulated verticals such as banking, insurance, and public and government agencies. "For these entities, that control is the difference between evaluating AI and deploying it across their full organization," the company said.
In addition, Claude deployments through Amazon Bedrock carry the audit trails and access controls that risk and compliance teams require before anything reaches production.
"When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilots into the systems that matter most. Adding in-country inference marks a significant step forward in what we are building here — a growing local team, strong performance in Indian languages, and partnerships that put this technology to work for India," said Irina Ghose, Managing Director, India, Anthropic, in a statement.
The company is also expanding its team and partnerships in the country.
Since opening its office in Bengaluru in February, the company said its India team has grown across enterprises, digital natives, and startups. Its clients include enterprises such as Axis Bank, Godrej Industries, and TCS, and digital natives and startups including Swiggy, Zoho, InVideo, Rocket, and Atlan.
It is also working with organizations such as the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), and open-source platforms such as MOSIP and OpenG2P, which are using Claude to help test vulnerabilities and exploits early.
