Anthony Gordon breaks silence after Everton confirm transfer to Newcastle

Anthony Gordon has explained why Newcastle United are the right club for him after his move from Everton was confirmed on Sunday afternoon.

The ECHO revealed on Friday evening that Everton had agreed a £40m upfront fee for the 21-year-old, rising to £45m in add-ons, who joined the Blues as an 11-year-old following his release from Liverpool.

Expected to be a key player for Everton during the current campaign on the back of his breakthrough campaign last term, Gordon was handed the No.10 shirt in the summer and vowed to up his attacking output in recognition of this prestigious switch.

Interest in the youngster first arose last summer, with Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur each being linked with the player. Chelsea were the side displaying the most intent to secure a deal, but saw an offer worth in excess of £40m rejected.

Five months later, however, and Everton have decided to cash in on the Kirkdale-born forward, who made his desire to leave Goodison Park clear after submitting a formal transfer request.

Explaining why he chose to make the move to St James' Park, Gordon said: "Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me.

"I think the fan base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they're heading in the right direction.

"I feel like it's a really big step. People haven't seen what I'm capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club's going, I can really excel here."
