Anthony Gordon and Everton sent transfer message by Jamie Carragher as Chelsea 'make bid'

Jamie Carragher has claimed that ‘there’s no way’ Everton can accept Chelsea’s bid for Anthony Gordon.

Thomas Tuchel’s side reportedly tabled a £40million offer for the Toffees winger on Sunday afternoon as they continue to revamp their squad under new owner Todd Boehly. Chelsea’s bid will test the resolve of those in charge at Goodison Park, having lost Richarlison earlier this summer and without Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the foreseeable future due to injury.

Despite Everton’s insistence during this window that Gordon is not for sale, the situation regarding Chelsea’s interest has developed swiftly. And when the report was reiterated following Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Carragher said ‘there’s no way’ the club can lose another of their main attacking threats and boyhood Evertonian.

“It’s a lot of money for a young player just coming on to the scene,” Carragher said. “But I don't see how Everton could accept that. The position they find themselves in right now, lacking attacking players, he’s the one big hope for the club.

“The supporters aren't daft at Everton. They've lost their first two games, they know it's going to be a difficult season, they need an attacking player coming in so there's no way they can let him go.

“He's a local lad and he's the one they are all hanging their hats on. I think it will have to be a lot higher than that (£40m) for Everton to accept that.”

Another former Liverpool man, Graeme Souness, added that the reported £40million is a significant sum for a 21-year-old with just over 50 appearances in the top-flight and that ‘goes to ground too easily’.

“Would I be surprised? £40M for a 21-year-old who’s played 50 games in the Premier League,” Souness added. “He’s not set the hedge on fire. He’s a dribbler, he’s quick enough. For me, he goes to ground too easily.

“That’s a hell of a lot of money for someone who’s only played 50 games. He’s not screaming at you when you see him play that he’s going to be a top man.”
