Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards posted a statement on social media Monday addressing an alleged text message exchange in which he appears to be urging a woman to get an abortion.
“I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man,” Edwards wrote in the statement. “All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them,” he continued. “I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.”
The leaked texts, purported to be from Edwards, were posted on Instagram. They show a photo of a positive pregnancy test and Edwards’s alleged responses of “Hell Nawl can’t do dis” and “Get an abortion lol.” That was followed by an image purportedly showing the receipt for a $100,000 wire transfer to the woman.
Separately, Edwards’s current girlfriend announced on social media last week that she is pregnant.
The allegation against Edwards and his comment on the matter became public as the T-Wolves have built the top record in the NBA’s Western Conference at 19–5. Edwards leads the team with averages of 24.2 points and 1.3 steals per game.
