Ant and Dec's new Saturday Night Takeaway game should be 'show on its own'

Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway has always been a rollercoaster ride of madcap mayhem with games, stunts and surprises for people across the country.

But tonight the Geordie pair unleashed a new game on the show - giving two people miles apart the chance to win £500 each.

And the game proved something of a hit with audiences, with some even saying it could become a programme in its own right.

The game involved the hosts picking someone from the audience, with the news that the producers had put a doorbell camera on their front door after they left to join the studio audience earlier.

And the challenge was for one of their neighbours to run out of their house in just 45 seconds, ring on the doorbell and say 'ring my bell' - and both the unwitting audience member and the fleet-footed neighbour would win £500 each.

That's not a lot of time - and while introducing the new game Ant McPartlin admitted: "This is where it could go very, very wrong."

The audience member was a chap called Reece, who looked hopeful but nervous when he realised it could be fairly embarrassing if none of his neighbours were watching, or recognised him standing sheepishly in the audience - or didn't have their running shoes on to race around to his front door.

In the end, it took just a few seconds for one of Reece's neighbours - a chap in a Newcastle shirt - to get to the door. The fact he said 'ring my doorbell', instead of just 'ring my bell' was glossed over by a relieved and jubilant Ant and Dec, as they proclaimed the idea a success, and said both would win £500.

The reaction on social media to this latest idea from the Saturday Night Takeaway ideas factory was largely positive.

And, just like In For A Penny made the progression from Saturday Night Takeaway staple to a show of its own hosted by Stephen Mulhern, so 'Ring My Bell' could, according to many fans of the show.

"Calling it now," announced TV Zone Extra on Twitter. "Ring My Bell soon become a series itself."

"I think I just want a full episode of 'ring my bell'," said Laura Ingham on Twitter.

Lee Kelman agreed, saying: "Ring my bell could be a game show by itself."
