Anonymous targets RT portal in ‘cyber war’ against Russia

Anonymous, an international activist and hacktivist collective, has taken responsibility for taking down the website of Russia’s state broadcaster RT TV network.

One of the Twitter handles of the group wrote, “The #Anonymous collective has taken down the website of the #Russian propaganda station RT News.” The group further said that they are officially in a “cyber war” against the Russian government. Additionally, they have also taken responsibility for taking down the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service which is the federal-level executive governmental organ that controls the execution of the antitrust law and related areas.

RT has been banned in Poland besides other Russian news channels. It has been accused of spreading propaganda backed by the Kremlin.

According to Business Insider India, the hacker collective has also launched distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against websites of Russian internet service providers, including Com2Com, Relcom, Sovam Teleport and PTT-Teleport Moscow.

Anonymous wrote, “We, as a collective, want only peace in the world. We want a future for all of humanity. So, while people around the globe smash your internet providers to bits, understand that it's entirely directed at the actions of the Russian government and Putin.”
