Annan Athletic are on the cusp of securing their place in the knockout round of the Premier Sports Cup.
A victory tonight at home to Ayr United would see them qualify top of Group F and clear of the chasing pack.
Peter Murphy’s side go into the game off the back of an emphatic 4-0 win over Elgin City at Galabank on Saturday.
With just 30 seconds on the clock the Galabankies created their first opening of the match down the right wing but the ball was cleared. The visitors then had their own spell of pressure with a series of free-kicks but they were unable to work Greg Fleming in the Annan goal.
With 13 minutes gone the home side took the lead from the penalty spot. Tommy Muir, who held up the ball in the box, was upended by Rory MacEwan and Iain Snedden pointed to the spot.
Aidan Smith stepped up and sent Daniel Hoban the wrong way.
Just three minutes later former Leeds United man Josh Galloway burst down the right-hand side and squared the ball to Tommy Goss who was waiting to pounce to make it 2-0.
Annan’s stellar first half continued on 37 minutes when Smith stuck away his second. Fleming’s long goal kick was knocked on by Goss and his header fell into the path of Smith. The striker’s first effort was saved but the ball squirmed under the keeper and he was able to tuck away the second attempt.
Just a minute from the break Galloway was inches away from making it four but his long range effort bounced off the crossbar.
Annan Athletic host Ayr United at Galabank tonight at 7.45pm.
