Annan Athletic make history with promotion to League One

Annan Athletic made history on Friday night.

Peter Murphy’s side secured promotion against Clyde in the League One play-off final meaning they will play in the third tier for the first time.

The Galabankies gaffer said: “I am delighted to make history for the club.

“I think with everything we had to go through to get to this stage with two play-off finals already, this was third time lucky.

“The players have been exceptional. They had to withstand a barrage from Clyde.”

Murphy is the third-longest reigning manager in Scotland, and was asked where he places this in his list of achievements in his footballing career.

The 42-year-old Carlisle United legend scored the winning goal in the final of the 2011 Football League Trophy at Wembley against Brentford and placed Friday night right up there.

He said: “I think it’s a massive achievement. I’ve only been in management for a few years. But to get promoted after just a few seasons is huge.

“I probably won’t be taking it in right away. Especially seeing all of the younger players over there enjoying themselves, it’s great to see.

“I think for any manager taking over a team ideally you want to get promoted but it doesn’t always happen like that. We’ve made the play-offs a few times in the years I’ve been here which is good, but we were able to top it off tonight with promotion.”

The Irishman also praised the travelling support which outnumbered the Clyde fans.

He said: “The fans were great and we had a great turnout. I think we brought more fans than Clyde did, which is excellent.

“They were very loud, I think they enjoyed the night and they’ll enjoy the weekend and hopefully they continue to support us all the time.”

With a wry smile, he added: “I think it’s going to be a quiet night. I’ll have a few beers when we head back to Annan. I will be tucked up in bed early.”
