Television presenter Anna Richardson has paid an emotional tribute to her "fun-loving" and "complex" father, Jim, who has died after a nearly decade-long battle with vascular dementia.
The 55-year-old, known for presenting Naked Attraction, shared the news with her 86,700 Instagram followers, revealing that her father passed away on 25 June. His final two weeks were spent in hospital, where he suffered from heart failure, pneumonia and a collapsed lung.
During this challenging period, Richardson and one of her brothers remained steadfast by his side. She described their vigil, saying they "set up camp" beside the retired Church of England canon "like two gargoyles guarding the entrance of a church," accompanying him in his final moments.
In a poignant Instagram post, Richardson reflected on the nature of mortality. "Death is strange. We spend our lives trying not to talk about it, until one day, it’s the only thing in the room," she wrote. "We burst into this world fighting for breath, and so often we leave it in exactly the same way. It’s messy, physical, and at times, totally undignified. Just like birth."
She added: "His body may have been failing him but his will to live was astonishing. When it became clear his heart was too weak, my brother and I moved into his room and set up camp either side of him – like two gargoyles guarding the entrance of a church. One generation accompanying another into the next world."
Mr Richardson was diagnosed with vascular dementia almost ten years ago. This condition, identified by Dementia UK as the second most common type after Alzheimer’s, results from reduced blood flow to the brain, impacting concentration, thinking, and daily activities.
Anna Richardson has been a vocal advocate for dementia awareness, highlighting the need for greater support for those affected by the illness.
She paid tribute to the "extraordinary life" her father led, particularly his dedication to the church. "A working class lad from south-east London, who knew he had a calling," she shared. "He travelled the world, worked closely with every faith, met the Pope, received his OBE from Queen Elizabeth, all while ministering to his congregation in the Church of England."
Describing his multifaceted character, she concluded: "He was fun-loving, private, difficult, thoughtful, and oh-so complex – but he was my Dad. And I loved him. Even though he wasn’t afraid of death, he didn’t want to go just yet. He believed he was going to the company of Angels – I hope so very much that he’s right."
Richardson noted that her father’s "last great adventure" was his involvement in the Channel 4 documentary, Anna Richardson: Love, Loss & Dementia, which aired in October 2024. The programme explored her family’s experiences alongside those of others grappling with the condition.
