  • A 26-year-old white British man was arrested at an address in Newton Abbot, Devon on Friday on suspicion of the murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe, Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said.
  • Ms Widdecombe, who appeared on Talk radio on Wednesday, lived in Haytor, near Newton Abbott in Devon. She was found dead on Thursday having sustained serious injuries.
  • Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said there was “no information” at this time to suggest the murder of Ann Widdecombe was a “politically motivated crime”.
  • The death of is not being treated as terror-related, Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said on Friday.
  • Sir Keir Starmer said it was “really shocking news” that police have launched a murder investigation into the death, praising the former MP as a “distinguished politician”.
