Animal rights activists condemn illegitimate removal of sterilized dogs before G20 Summits in India

PUNE: Animals activists have slammed civic bodies in India for illegally picking up sterilized community dogs from their respective locations before delegates' visits during G20 summits.

Activists in various cities are now taking this issue with respective authorities to put an end to this practice. Videos on social media have also gone viral showing authorities picking up sterilized dogs.

In January this year, the Pune Municipal Corporation had illegally removed/relocated over 24 street dogs from roads through which the VIP guests of the G20 summit were to pass. A similar exercise was undertaken before PM Narendra Modi's visit to Pune last month. As per Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960, especially under Section 38 of the Act and also, as per the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, dogs cannot be relocated or removed from their territory.
