Anheuser-Busch to give away free beer when US hits vaccination goal

ST. LOUIS — Anheuser-Busch is now offering another reason to get vaccinated against COVID-19: free beer.

The Budweiser brewer said Wednesday that once 70% of American adults are at least partially inoculated, it'll buy a round of beer for anyone 21 or older.

Consumers will just have to upload a picture of themselves in their favorite beer-drinking location — be it a bar or a backyard — to Mycooler.com/Beer to get a free beer, seltzer, non-alcoholic beverage or other A-B product. (That web address, however, won't work until the country meets the goal.)

The new incentive is aligned with President Joe Biden's goal of having 70% of American adults receive at least one vaccine shot by July 4.

Nationwide, about 63% of adults have received at least one dose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Missouri, that number is about 54%.

The promotion is just the latest effort to encourage people to get vaccinated, aid the country's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic — and get customers back to the bar.

The Belgian brewer, which maintains its North American headquarters in St. Louis, produced an ad directing people to vaccine resources and offered 10,000 free drinks to adults 21 and up who showed proof of vaccination in April.

The company has also donated several million dollars in efforts to help restaurants reopen.

A-B is not alone in offering free cold ones to the vaccinated.

Brewers in New Jersey did the same last month, and brewers in New York are doing it this month.

Some state governments are also offering vaccinated people other prizes through special lotteries.

Ohio is doing five $1 million giveaways to adults and offering full-ride scholarships to public colleges in the state to five vaccinated teenagers. New York and California are making similar offers, while Illinois is offering 50,000 free tickets to Six Flags theme parks.

West Virginia is also raffling off a chance at $1 million as well as opportunities to snag custom guns.
