Angus MacInnes of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ fame dies at 77

Angus MacInnes, the actor beloved for his role as Gold Leader Jon “Dutch” Vander in Star Wars: A New Hope, has passed away at the age of 77. His family announced his death in a heartfelt statement shared on the actor’s official Facebook page on Monday.

MacInnes passed away on December 23, 2024. While no cause of death was disclosed, the family, in their tribute post, highlighted his lasting legacy as a performer.

Born on October 27, 1947, in Ontario, Canada, MacInnes enjoyed a career that spanned decades, appearing in a variety of notable films, including Witness, Judge Dredd, Hellboy, and Captain Phillips. However, it was his portrayal of the Y-wing squadron rebel commander in Star Wars: A New Hope that cemented his place in cinematic history.

“Angus was more than an actor—he was a kind, thoughtful, and generous soul who brought warmth and humour into the lives of everyone who knew him,” the family wrote. “His work touched countless lives, and he took great pride in being part of stories that continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.”

MacInnes held a special bond with the Star Wars community and likewise, his family said, "For Angus, the fans of Star Wars held a special place in his heart.” Their statement further read, “He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community.”

Following the announcement, fans flooded social media with tributes to the late actor, praising his memorable performances and warm presence. Many celebrated his contribution to the Star Wars saga and the joy he brought to fans worldwide.
