Anger as school shut for a week after boiler breaks down

A frustrated dad has spoken of his “disgust” at a primary school in Sefton being closed for almost a week due to problems with its boiler.

Hudson Primary School on Moorhey Road in Maghull announced last Friday, March 2, it would be shut temporarily due to “boiler failure.”

The school, which teaches 300 pupils aged 2-11, remains closed, with one parent taking to social media to complain at how long the repairs are taking, stating: “How can an entire school (Hudson primary ) be closed for over a week due to hot water.

“The school closed Thursday and is not due to open this week- what a disgrace”

Hudson Primary school headteacher Niki Craddock said the boiler broke on Thursday and “cannot be fixed” and needs replacing.

According to Ms Craddock: “Colleagues at Sefton council are working hard to source and fit.”

As a result of the boiler problem, most of the buildings in the school are closed, apart from the Autism Base where Ms Craddock said: “36 children and their teaching staff have been able to remain at school in familiar surroundings, with their usual teachers.”

She added: “On Friday March 3, our amazing staff were able to deliver virtual online classes, at short notice, to the rest of the school.”

Since Monday, the school has been delivering some teaching face to face from Maghull High School although half of the school population have been asked to remain at home and continue being taught online while the problem is being fixed with pupils expected to be able to now return to school on Friday.

Ms Craddock said: “Since Monday March 6, we have been able to make use of a space created by our colleagues at Maghull High School so that we are able to deliver face-to-face teaching for some students. However, as the space is limited, and not every Hudson Primary student can be accommodated at Maghull High, we have been left with no choice but to prioritise access to this space.

“Around half of our school-aged pupils have been taught at Maghull High, with the rest receiving virtual lessons from the teaching team, in line with their curriculum.

“We have kept families updated via ClassDojo at every step, and although I appreciate the inconvenience that this has caused many families, I would like to thank our parents and carers for their patience, and the kind words of support we have received.

“Our staff have gone the extra mile to support our students as well as we can, under difficult circumstances, and our students have shown incredible resilience. My thanks also go to colleagues at Maghull High for accommodating us swiftly, and for warmly welcoming us to their school.

“I have been assured that the new boiler system will be in place, allowing our school to reopen, with all teachers and students returning to school on Friday March 10.”
