Anger as Cambuslang streets covered in anti-royal graffiti days after Queen's funeral

Cambuslang residents have slammed "senseless" graffiti mocking the Royal Family that has appeared across the town just days after the Queen died.

The insulting vandalism were sprayed last week, centring on the town's Main Street.

"F*** the King" and a mocking message referencing Michael Fagan, the man who broke into the monarch's bedroom in Buckingham Palace in 1982 were among the sprayed slogans.

One resident who contacted Lanarkshire Live stated: "I'm disgusted with the hateful graffiti that's appearing all over Cambuslang.

"The tunnel at Sherry Heights is covered in it and so are some of the buildings there."

Another who messaged in said: "It's disgusting - it goes all the way along the Main Street."

Among the places affected were a vaping shop, a phone box and the town's Costa Coffee, which had graffiti sprayed over it stating "£8 million pound funeral while the country starves".

Glenn Jamieson of the 217 Gilbertfield Boy's Brigade told Lanarkshire Live the timing of the slogans was classless.

He said: "I've no issue with people having anti-monarchy opinions but there's a time and a place to show that, and now was definitely not that time. I was pretty saddened that people in our community would do this after someone passed away.

"The Queen was the patron to the Boys Brigade and part of the process for the Queen's Badge involves volunteering in the community. This could include community clean-up and having to clean some of this graffiti.

"I cannot understand why people would make such senseless statements - I am proud that the Queens Boys' Brigade teaches respect, which unfortunately some of these people don't have."

Anyone wishing to report offensive graffiti to South Lanarkshire Council should call 0303 123 1020, and the local authority state they will aim to remove it within 24 hours of being contacted.

The council spends thousands of pounds every year dealing with cleaning up graffiti across the region.
