Angela Rayner warns Labour is ‘running out of time’ as she hits out at immigration reforms

  • Angela Rayner has warned that the Labour Party is "running out of time" to deliver change and must not "go through the motions in the face of decline", in what is seen as a challenge to Sir Keir Starmer's leadership.
  • Ms Rayner criticised proposed immigration reforms, specifically the plan to double the time it takes for migrants to qualify for permanent residence from five to 10 years.
  • She argued that altering the terms for those already in Britain, who arrived with an understanding of settlement, would constitute a "breach of trust" and be "un-British".
  • Her comments were made at an event by the campaign group Mainstream, following a letter co-ordinated by Tony Vaughan urging the Government to reconsider its immigration proposals.
  • The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has defended the changes, asserting that restoring order at the border aligns with Labour values and is a necessary condition for a Labour government's achievements.
