Angela Rayner pokes fun at Liz Truss being 'toast' with resurfaced crumpet snap

An old snap has re-emerged of Prime Minister Liz Truss which has given some members of the Shadow Cabinet some easy ammunition for jokes to tell her she's 'toast'. This comes as Truss announced her resignation after just 44 days in Downing Street and called for a new Conservative Leader election, following a very difficult time in office.

Her resignation comes after a tumultuous few weeks, which saw the PM send former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng packing after a disastrous mini-budget tanked the pound in the financial markets. But things got even worse for the Government yesterday (September 19) when it was revealed that her Home Secretary Suella Braverman had sent an official document from her personal email. The ex-Cabinet minister then resigned, taking a departing shot at the Prime Minister in a letter claiming she had "concerns about the direction of this government".

All of this was followed by a Commons vote last night on fracking, during which accusations were thrown around about bullying of Conservative MPs as there was mixed messaging on whether the vote would be a confidence vote in the government or not.

But to add the cherry on top, an old image of Liz Truss has emerged of her spending time in a crumpet factory in 2018 which has prompted jokes from the opposition about her being "toast".

The tweet sees Truss holding a crumpet with the caption: "I like crumpet in the morning. #flatbreadfactory #crumpety."

But the tweet has been sent further by the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Angela Rayner, who has retweeted it and couldn't resist poking fun at Truss.

Her post adds: "It's toast for you."

This tweet, which now has over 900 retweets of its own has garnered a lot of reaction from many who found it amusing, with some agreeing with the sentiment.

One person simply wrote: "She is toast." Which came alongside a picture of some burnt bread.

While another wrote: "Nobody left to pull her bacon out of the fire."
