Ange Postecoglou responds to links with England job as Spurs boss addresses future

Ange Postecoglou insisted his full focus is on delivering success for Tottenham, amid reports he is being considered for the England job.

The FA have begun their search for Gareth Southgate’s replacement, after the 53-year-old stepped down following the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are believed to be among the leading contenders, but The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Postecoglou is also on the list of targets.

Speaking after Spurs’ 5-1 friendly win over Hearts, the Australian claimed he was unaware of those rumours.

“Mate I’m at the start of pre-season,” Postecoglou said.

“Big year, I’m the Tottenham manager. I’ve got nothing else but trying to bring success to this football club.

“Until I do that, there’s no point me thinking about anything else. I had a nap this afternoon mate, so I’ve got no idea what’s going on.”

Postecoglou has experience of international management, having led Australia between 2013 and 2017, before returning to club football with Yokohama F. Marinos, Celtic and now Spurs.

Asked whether he could see himself moving back into that world again, Postecoglou said: “I love coaching, who wouldn’t love coaching their national team?

“But the future, who knows? Five years ago I was in Japan, now I’m in the Premier League.”

This will be Postecoglou’s second season in charge at Tottenham, after he led them to fifth in the Premier League last season to secure a return to European football.

New signings Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray both featured and impressed against Hearts, and the Spurs boss suggested there will be “a couple more additions” before the end of the transfer window.

“Like I said, nothing's really changed, I'm comfortable,” Postecoglou said.

“We've got a strategy in place about what we want to do. I'm really happy with the two lads we've brought in, both obviously very talented but more importantly really ambitious.

“They're not here to ease their way in. They want to play and I think that's great. They've brought a good energy to the group and no doubt there will be a couple more additions but I'm comfortable with where we're at.”
