Ange Postecoglou reacts to Scottish Football Writers awards storm as Celtic boss hopes it's a catalyst for change

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou wants the controversial comments that emerged from the Scottish Football Writers' awards to act as a catalyst for change.

An apology was issued after speaker Bill Copeland sparked outrage at the annual event over the topics covered during the speech.

Two tables walked out in disgust over the "sexist" and "racist" jokes that were made.

And now Celtic boss Postecoglou – who has spoken at length over how rewarding managing different cultures across the globe – wants the fallout to be used for good.

The 56-year-old was in attendance and wants the events of Sunday night to lead to lasting change.

He told Sky Sports: “For me, the key thing to come out of that is that you can treat it as a little bit of a controversy, or you can treat it as a moment where you can be better.

“We are constantly looking for these moments where we can all be better in terms of what we do and the way we approach things.

“We’ve got to understand that there are people in that room who have different values, different views, irrespective of that, there is an opportunity there for us to learn.

“The organisers have come out and apologised, I don’t think they did it with any harmful intent but if they just focus on the controversy and try to put it to one side then there is a failure there.

“In that space, we shouldn’t really be having those kind of moments, people should already know.

“But in the place of a misstep, what you want to do is be better the next time.”

The Celtic manager knows his team are one point from the title and is remaining calm as he looks to secure Scottish Premiership glory away to Dundee United.

And he joked Sunday's trip to see the Bad Guys with his family was as the chance to be named champions was put on ice after Rangers won.

He added: “Good movie.

“Look, the main result went our way, we won.

“That is what we have been focusing on the whole season.

“We are in a great position with two game to go and all we want to do is replicate our performance from the weekend.

“If we do that, we know we are hard to stop and we will get the job done.”

“There I this helicopter thing here in Scotland that apparently everyone tells me I should be worried about.

“Ultimately, what we know is that we are in a great position, it is in our hands now.

“There is nothing that suggests to me that the way we are playing our football or the way we are approaching our training that says to me that we need to refocus.

“We can go through this finish line may different ways but what we want to do is play our best football and burst on through it.

“That is what we did Saturday, and that is what we will try to do Wednesday.

“For us, we know that when we bring our game and our intensity forward we are hard to stop."
