Anfield trams, Lidl burglar's trail of blood, and Tesco meal deal repulsion

These are the ECHO headlines this morning, Friday, December 2.

Trams could be answer to Anfield matchday traffic woes

Tram train technology could be the answer to public transport issues around Anfield and the wider North Liverpool area.

A suggestion on how to best improve public transport options for communities and those attending matches at the world famous football ground were put to outgoing Cllr Liam Robinson, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Transport and Air Quality portfolio holder during a meeting of its overview and scrutiny committee this afternoon. Currently, the nearest train station to the ward and football ground is more than two miles away in Kirkdale.

Members were debating the development of the combined authority’s local transport plan, which looks to improve public transport options and encourage people to swap their car for a cleaner, greener alternative. Cllr Steve Radford, chair of the committee, and Tuebrook and Stoneycroft member, said on matchdays you can “sense” the air pollution being generated by cars around the stadium and proposed the adoption of passenger trains on the nearby Canada Dock Branch line, known as the Bootle Branch line.

Lidl burglar's trail of blood in Chinese buffet led police straight to him

A burglar was caught out after leaving a trail of blood in a Chinese buffet restaurant he broke into.

Phillip Jones was then locked in a convenience store by a brave shop worker after he raided the premises at knifepoint. To round off his crime spree, he burgled a Lidl supermarket to pilfer booze on three separate occasions.

Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday afternoon, Thursday, that the first in a spate of incidents came on February 21 this year when the 40-year-old, of Windfield Green in Garston, targeted the Chinese Buffet in Speke. Kenneth Grant, prosecuting, described how Jones broke in and stole a quantity of cash from the premises - but was linked to the incident after his blood was discovered on cables at the back of the till.

Woman 'repulsed' after biting into Tesco meal deal

A woman has spoken of her horror after tucking into her festive lunch.

Maria Brand had decided to buy herself a Tesco Meal Deal earlier this week from the King Street express store in Wallasey, which she could enjoy on her lunch break in between jobs as a teacher. But after looking forward to tucking into her Turkey and Trimmings sandwich, she said she was "not expecting" what she found.

Pulling over in New Brighton, the Merseyside mum was soon "repulsed" when she felt something "hard" in her mouth. Upon further inspection she found what looked like a piece of wood, ruining future meal deals for her.

She told the ECHO the meal deal was "a bit of a treat" for her short lunch break on Wednesday and was her first seasonal sandwich of the festive season. She said: "I was honestly repulsed when I took the penultimate bite of the first half."

Maria added: "I pulled into the prom to eat quick and was looking at the lovely scenery until my last bite. I thought it was bone but when I took it out of my mouth I saw what can only be described as wood.
