Andy Robertson says Liverpool ‘lost the edge’ after Diogo Jota death

  • Former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has told the Stick to Football podcast that the club lost its competitive edge and struggled to care about football last season following the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
  • Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a road accident last July, just a week after Robertson had attended Jota's wedding, leaving the entire squad consumed by grief.
  • Robertson explained that the tragedy caused Liverpool to “lose the edge” and created an exceptionally tough environment for new high-profile signings, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz , who struggled to settle into the “heartbroken” club.
  • Liverpool endured a severely underperforming campaign, losing nine out of 12 matches between September and November before finishing fifth in the Premier League and sacking head coach Arne Slot.
  • The Scotland captain, who moved to Tottenham this summer, previously revealed how Jota's widow urged him to carry his late friend and team-mate's dream of playing at the World Cup.
