Andy Robertson claims Liverpool players have "let down" Alisson this season

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson believes that goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been “let down” by his teammates this season following the Reds’ victory over Manchester City on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the game as Jurgen Klopp’s side returned to winning ways, but it was Alisson who received plenty of plaudits for his sublime assist to set up the Egyptian's winner, whilst also making a number of saves to preserve a clean sheet.

And following the game, Robertson hailed Alisson as the world's best goalkeeper, although he made an honest admission over Liverpool's own performances this season and their impact on the Brazilian international throughout the campaign.

The Scotsman said: "I think Ali's the best in the world for sure in what he does. We've all probably let him down this season in that he's faced too many shots, he's had to be making too many saves and I think he'll be a lot happier [after the win over City].

"Ali on the ball is unbelievable and you have to trust him in those moments. [The goal] came from their corner or free-kick or whatever it is and Ali has got it in his hands and you trust him to make the right decisions.

"We had a similar goal against Manchester United a couple of seasons ago where Mo did the exact same thing. He capitalises on a mistake, someone's took a poor touch and then Mo's clear through on goal and his composure has been excellent.

Is Alisson the best goalkeeper in the Premier League? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

"It's something we trust Ali with, he's unbelievable with the ball at his feet and he's got great vision as well and when we see something then we have to react off it and we all pushed up and luckily the ball has ended up in the back of the net."

Since missing the Community Shield victory over Pep Guardiola’s side on July 30 through injury, Alisson has returned to Liverpool ’s starting lineup and started every game since. However, his side’s poor start has warranted just four clean sheets in 13 games across all competitions.

Liverpool have also conceded 18 goals during that time, yet the 30-year-old has been a mainstay throughout and has put in a number of impressive performances to ensure those numbers haven’t got any worse as he continues to show his worth in Liverpool’s side.

Sunday’s assist for Salah’s match-winner, in which he acted quickly to launch a pin-point ball up to the Egyptian as part of a blistering counter attack, was just another world class moment from the Brazilian.

That tallied as Alisson’s third assist in 145 Premier League games for Liverpool, while he also has a goal to add to that record, making him just the fourth ever goalkeeper to record four goals and assists in the top flight. Only former Leeds and Tottenham goakeeper Paul Robinson has directly contributed to more goals.

As for Robertson, the Scotsman made his first start for the Reds on Sunday since the 4-1 defeat to Napoli on September 7. With him back in the side, Liverpool should become more assured in defence, while he will aim to perform even better in front of Alisson in goal for the remainder of the season.
