Andy Murray feels that his fitness levels are the best they have been in years as he booked a spot in the US Open third round with victory over American wildcard Emilio Nava.
It has been six years since Murray won his third Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. Since having two hip surgeries, the first in 2018, the Brit has struggled with his fitness and form. The Covid pandemic, which led to a break in tournaments, didn't help and a groin injury set him back again last year.
The 35-year-old was also concerned after suffering recurring cramp issues during matches in Cincinnati last month in preparation for the US Open.
However, Murray's form is starting to come together at Flushing Meadows, winning his first round match in straight sets against Francisco Cerundolo. In his second round match the British player's fitness was tested by American Nava - having lost the first set 5-7 before coming storming back 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.
"Physically this is the best I have felt in the last few years," said Murray after booking his place in the third round where he meets 13th seed Italian Matteo Berrettini tomorrow.
" My movement is by far the best it has been in a long time, that has always been an important part of my game. I’m getting closer to where I want to be and hopefully I can have a deep run here."

Murray was tested by 20-year-old Nava, who took control of the early stages of their second round match before winning the first set. However, Murray showed the form which will worry Nadal and the other tournament favourites.
"Emilio (Nava) was dictating a lot of the points in the first set," Murray added. "I started to hit the ball a little deeper and could then control the points more.
"He played a really long five-set match (in the first round) and it’s not easy to recover, so I think that’s why his level dropped, but he’s a brilliant young player and he will have a bright future."
