Andy Goram 'greatest Scottish goalkeeper' tribute paid as football community remembers Rangers icon

The football community has paid tribute to Andy Goram after the Rangers icon's passing was confirmed.

It was announced in a devastating statement, released online by the Ibrox club on Saturday, that Goram had passed aged 58 after a short battle with cancer. He was only told the news recently and revealed in a media interview that he only had a short amount of time to live.

Nicknamed 'The Goalie' during his playing days, Goram was a hero of the Govan club's Nine In A Row years during his time between the sticks for Rangers between 1991 and 1998. His former club said that 'the thoughts of the directors, management, players and staff are today with Andy’s family, and asked that their privacy is respected at this sad time, with funeral details released in due course.'

Personalities and clubs from across the game have moved to remember the legendary stopper. Hibs brought him to Scottish football in 1987 and he spent four years in Leith.

They said in a statement: "Everyone at Hibernian FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Andy Goram following a short battle with cancer. "The thoughts of everyone at Hibernian FC are with Andy’s family and friends."

"In his prime, he may have been amongst the best on the planet. A life that was sadly all too short, but what a life it was. My thoughts are with Andy’s family and close friends.

"Rest in peace now, Goalie."

A short stint beckoned at English giants Manchester United in 2001 for Goram. Red Devils hero Gary Neville said: "Terribly sad news about Andy Goram, RIP Andy. Love to all your family."

Celtic legends also sent support in their droves. Pierre van Hooijdonk said, 'my condolences to his family' while John Hartson added 'sorry to hear the sad passing of Andy Goram, RIP Andy.'

Former clubs, Hamilton and Queen of the South will hold a minute of silence prior to their friendly match at New Douglas Park on Saturday. Tributes are predicted to to pour in throughout the day and in the weeks ahead.

It's more heartbreaking news for Rangers, with legendary boss Walter Smith and kitman Jimmy Bell among those to have passed in the last year.
