- Former England striker Andy Carroll has revealed in his new autobiography, Owning It , that he was sexually assaulted by a male celebrity at his home in 2021 shortly after playing a match for Newcastle United.
- After waking to find the man assaulting him, Carroll threw the attacker out of his home and punched him unconscious when he tried to re-enter, before calling the police while sobbing.
- The attacker denied sexual assault but was convicted of sexual offences following a trial where Carroll testified, leading to a three-year prison sentence, placement on the Sex Offender Register, and a village ban.
- Carroll disclosed that testifying was humiliating and horrendous, noting that the persistent trauma affected his daily life and football career, but he decided to share his experience in the hope of helping others.
- The 37-year-old, who currently co-owns and plays for National League South side Dagenham and Redbridge, is also set to stand trial in January after pleading not guilty to breaching a non-molestation order.
