There are a few to choose from regarding the pros and cons of letting Andreas Christensen go. All in all, it is his choice to make, and it seems like he's made it. No, he does not owe the Chelsea fans anything, and no, it is not a sign of betrayal. I am not a fan of how the whole contract saga went down. However, I am more than happy to take the loss.
It truly is a loss to lose a player with such a high ceiling, but we cannot keep living in regret of our past mistakes. Losing Salah and De Bruyne was a massive blow, yes. Losing Christensen is a gamble.
Whatever he decides to do in the end, we wish him well.
Several Christensen's in the world - positive
I'm sure you know of the great saying, "there's plenty more fish in the sea". A saying that my mother would say to me following a break-up. This feels like the same vibe. It is disheartening that Christensen could choose a future at Barcelona rather than sign a new contract. Fans have watched him blossom into a near-complete centre-back for many years, and it feels like his best is yet to come. However, there are many more Christensen's in the world.
Jules Kounde, for example. Both players are in their early 20's, and both preferred on the right. They have a lot of potential and have great positional awareness, but only one has played under Thomas Tuchel. When I think of irreplaceable players in Chelsea's team, I think of N'Golo Kante, Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho. These players have attributes that you will struggle to find elsewhere. Christensen isn't a unicorn in a field of horses as of right now. If his journey ends here, another person's journey will begin.
Kevin De Bruyne & Mohamed Salah regret - negative
As much as I would like to get over the fact that Chelsea let go of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah prematurely, it's challenging to overcome.
These two players were dismissed by the Blues and went on to become two of the best players in the world today. What are the odds! Can you imagine Chelsea allowing another talent to slip from their grasp? I guess that's where the anxiety arises from. What if Christensen goes to Barcelona and fulfils the prophecy that John Terry laid. Terry told sky sports that the Danish Internation would become a top footballer. To be fair, he also said he would become one of the leading men for Chelsea.
I don't know what to believe nowadays!
Roman Abramovich uncertainty - negative
The scariest thing about Christensen's transfer to Barcelona is that he could potentially set off a domino effect. Roman Abramovich has officially put Chelsea up for sale.
The Blues are about to enter a realm of the unknown. Whilst the search continues for Abramovich's successor. The board has a handful of contracts to plan out. Not just Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Christensen's, but those out of contract next season too of Kante, Jorginho, and so forth.
Losing Christensen now could cause others to follow suit. A player who leaves and finds stability in another team could catch a few eyes. It would be better for the squad to stick together in solidarity at a time like this. Yes, we're about to go through a tough transition, but that is more cause to stay. Help out the club in any way possible.
However, does Christensen really owe the fans anything of that magnitude?
This is what he wants - positive
Let's end on a positive. Reports have suggested that this is a move that the 25-year-old wants. According to Sport, Sten Christensen would rather his son stay at Stamford Bridge. His father/agent has made his preference clear, but Christensen has already decided on his future.,
If there is one thing that Chelsea fans can unanimously agree on, we don't want a player who no longer wants to play for the squad. Any slight inkling that you want a move away can open a can of worms. It's evident that players do not play to their highest ability when they are in a space where they are unhappy.
The last thing we want is random rumours of a bust-up in changing rooms or speculation around poor performances from the Dane. It can all be avoided now. Too much has happened, and too much has been said
