Andre Onana kicked out of Cameroon World Cup squad after row with former Liverpool star Rigobert Song

A former Liverpool player is reported to have removed a player from his World Cup squad after a falling out.

The 2022 World Cup is currently underway in Qatar, with the tournament now in its second week. The latest match is Cameroon’s Group G clash against Serbia.

Former Liverpool star Rigobert Song is the manager of Cameroon, and has held the position since February of this year. During his playing career, the ex-defender made 38 appearances for the Reds from 1999-2001.

The build-up to Cameroon’s clash against Serbia was dominated by news surrounding goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Inter Milan star has been removed from the country’s 26-man squad, and is expected to fly back home.

It has been reported that is down to ‘disciplinary reasons’, with there rumoured to have been a falling out with Song in the hours before the match. MailOnline claim there was a “shouting match” between Song and Onana over the keeper’s style of play.

Song made the decision to replace Onana, who had played Cameroon's first World Cup encounter against Switzerland, with Devis Epassy, who had earned just five international caps prior to facing Serbia, who raced into a 3-1 lead before being pegged back to 3-3, at the time of writing.

While the exact cause of the argument is not known, a further report from journalist Helena Condis Edo has provided more insight. It has been claimed that Onana sees his relationship with the Cameroon national team as “irreversible”, despite attempts from the Cameroon Football Federation president and former striker Samuel Eto’o to arrange peace talks.
