Andhra Pradesh: Omicron triggered intense but short-lived third wave

VISAKHAPATNAM: The third wave of Covid-19, driven by the highly mutated Omicron variant, seems to have reached a plateau in Andhra Pradesh. The momentum of the third wave can be described as intense, but it was the shortest-lived wave among all three waves, which presented different epidemiological and clinical characteristics.

The third wave has stabilised in a matter of weeks—from the peak positivity rate of 36% on January 24 to 2.9% positivity rate on Monday. The state took 10 months in the first wave and seven months in the second to achieve a 99% recovery rate. In the ongoing third wave, the state may reach this milestone in a day or two as the recovery rate stands at 98.72%, that is, the state will hit the 99% recovery rate from the start of the third wave in just one-and-a-half months.
