Andhra Pradesh: CESL to distribute LED bulbs in rural areas

The Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary of the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), has requested the Energy Department to assist in the distribution of LED bulbs to households in Andhra Pradesh under the ‘Gram Ujala’ scheme that aims at taking the benefits of energy efficiency to every rural household.

In a communication to Energy Secretary B. Sreedhar, Managing Director and CEO of CESL, Mahua Acharya said that the CESL had distributed more than 10 lakh LED bulbs in five states including Andhra Pradesh on December 14 last year, under the ‘Gram Uajala’ programme launched as part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

“The distribution of LED bulbs in rural areas will help minimise the burden of electricity bills to some extent. It will also help reduce the peak demand considerably,” she said.

She said the entire expenditure incurred on distribution of LED bulbs would be borne by the CESL. “Neither does the State government nor the power utilities have to take any financial burden. The consumer needs to pay ₹10 per LED bulb,” she clarified.

Mr. Sreedhar said the ‘Gram Ujala’ scheme would give impetus to the government’s endeavour to provide quality and cost-effective power round the clock.

LED bulbs are energy efficient as they consume 88% less energy when compared to incandescent bulbs.
