ANAS Sarwar has been mocked after appearing to vote with the Scottish Conservatives in a vote at Holyrood on Wednesday.
It comes after MSPs overwhelmingly rejected a motion from the Scottish Tories “condemning” free bus travel for asylum seekers.
However, the Parliament did instead choose to vote for an amendment tabled by Finance Secretary Shona Robison, which effectively erased all of the Tories’ motion, replacing it with a statement welcoming action on the Winter Fuel Payment and two-child benefit cap.
Scottish Labour MSPs abstained on this particular motion. Well, except one of them.
Listed alongside the Scottish Tories is Sarwar himself, voting against Robison’s motion alongside the Scottish Conservatives.
The blunder was pointed out on Twitter/X by STV’s political editor Colin Mackay, who provided a reason for what happened.
“He pressed the wrong button,” Mackay said.
Of course, the SNP’s leader in Westminster Stephen Flynn was quick to poke fun at Sarwar.
He reposted Mackay’s tweet with the caption: “The man you want running your country.”
Who know what was going through Sarwar’s head at the time, but this move certainly won’t help those Labour-Tory comparisons go away anytime soon.
