To their credit, the Seahawks waited until the middle of the second round to pick a running back this time. That said, this time around it wasn’t a luxury pick and they actually needed some help, here.
With the No. 52 overall pick, Seattle selected UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet. He is a physical specimen for his position, checking in at 6-foot-0 and 214 pounds. Lance Zierlein’s comp at NFL.com is A.J. Dillon of the Packers.
At the combine, Charbonnet showed off the breadth of his athleticism – running a 4.53 forty yard dash, posting a 37″ vertical, a 10’2″ broad jump and 18 bench press reps.
Charbonnet is a bruiser of a featured rusher but also has ability as a receiver, most likely taking the third down load off projected starter Ken Walker’s plate.
With Rashaad Penny (Philadelphia) and Travis Homer (Chicago) leaving in free agency, the Seahawks needed to reload behind Walker. With Charbonnet in the fold, they have the bulk of that work done. Seahawks fans should not be shocked if they pick another running back prospect tomorrow, though.
