An Asian pear can look like any other sweet fruit, but needs extra acid for home canning; add 1 tablespoon of bottled lemon juice to every pint jar

Asian pears look just like apples because of their round shape and crunchy texture, but they have different requirements when it comes to preserving food at home. Asian pears themselves are sweet fruits and usually eaten raw, but they require the addition of acidic elements before they can be preserved. Penn State Extension recommends adding 1 tablespoon of bottled lemon juice to each pint jar before processing Asian pears in a boiling-water canner because some varieties are low in acidity. It ensures that the pears reach a safe acidity level during home canning and reduces the risk of harmful bacterial growth.

Home canning requires following tested recipes because changing ingredients or processing methods can affect food safety. The acidity content present in a fruit will determine if the fruit can be processed in a boiling water canner or if additional measures need to be taken.
