Amy Broadhurst wins World gold as Michael Conlan says 'welcome to the club'

Michael Conlan has heaped praise on Any Broadhurst after she won gold at the Women's World Boxing Championships.

Dundalk boxer Broadhurst - who fights out of St Bronagh's ABC in Rostrevor, Co Down - claimed an impressive win over Imane Khelif of Algeria in the light-welterweight final on Thursday.

It is the latest stellar moment for the 25-year-old, who is set to represent Northern Ireland at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Former amateur world champion Conlan was quick to praise Broadhurst following her success in Istanbul.

The Belfast featherweight star tweeted: "Unbelievable performance by Amy Broadhurst who has just won the world championships. Congrats champ @amybroadhurst12 welcome to the club."

Broadhurst follows in the footsteps of Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington to become Ireland's third female boxer to win the World Championships.

She did it in style claiming a 5-0 unanimous win over Khelif to become 63kg champion.

It turned into a brilliant day for Irish boxers as Lisa O'Rourke won her light middleweight title fight against Helena Alcinda Panguane of Mozambique.
