Amy Broadhurst's father 'bursting with joy and pride' after her European Championship gold medal win

Amy Broadhurst's father says he was 'bursting with joy and pride' following her European Championship gold medal win.

The Dundalk fighter added to her Commonwealth Games and World Championship wins by defeating Ukraine's Mariia Bova in their light-welterweight final on Saturday.

The 25-year-old's father was in Montenegro to see her win and took to social media to express his joy following the victory and also to congratulate her on being named the best boxer of the entire tournament.

He posted on Facebook: "Words can’t describe this years achievements and feelings. OH WOW, today Amy not only claimed EUROPEAN GOLD to add to her COMMONWEALTH and WORLD GOLD MEDALS but has just been awarded BEST BOXER OF THE ENTIRE TOURNAMENT. I’m absolutely delighted for her and over the moon bursting with joy and pride, what a way to end the year."

It was an historic tournament for Team Ireland as they picked up seven medals to top the medals table in Montenegro.

Kellie Harrington and Aoife O'Rourke joined Broadhurst in winning gold at the tournament, while Caitlin Fryers and Christina Desmond each claimed silver as Shannon Sweeney and Michaela Walsh won bronze.

Speaking to RTE after returning to Ireland, Broadhurst said: "It's been an unbelievable year. You couldn’t write it. I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be standing here a year ago.

"It’s a great stepping stone for me. I’ve proved that I’m one of the best in the world and I’m capable of making the Olympics so that’s the big goal next year.

"It’s the best female team Ireland has ever brought away and it’s so young as well so I’m looking forward to see what the younger ones are going to do. The best team in the world I’d say."
