Amsterdam has imposed a ban on demonstrations for three days following violent clashes involving Israeli soccer fans, which Dutch authorities have denounced as antisemitic. The incidents occurred after the Europa League soccer match between Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch team Ajax on Thursday night.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema expressed deep concern over the criminal acts that took place, where individuals on scooters targeted Maccabi supporters in hit-and-run assaults. The city has witnessed a total of 63 arrests, with 10 individuals remaining in custody. Five injured Israeli fans have been discharged from the hospital, while 20 to 30 others sustained minor injuries.
In response to the unrest, Amsterdam has implemented heightened security measures, including a ban on demonstrations, face-covering clothing, and carrying objects that could incite public disorder. Mayor Halsema emphasized the city's commitment to ensuring the safety of Israeli soccer supporters, locals, and particularly Jewish residents.
The tensions leading up to the match were fueled by social media videos showing Maccabi fans engaging in provocative behavior, including chanting anti-Arab slurs and expressing support for Israeli military actions in Gaza. Following the game, violent clashes erupted in the city center, with reports of ambushes and assaults on Maccabi fans.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the attacks as 'terrible' and 'horrific,' expressing shame over the incidents. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likened the antisemitic assaults to Kristallnacht, urging swift action against the perpetrators.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar visited the Netherlands to address the situation, calling for the prosecution of those responsible. The UN Secretary-General and Palestinian authorities also condemned the violence and called for protection of all communities.
Israel has taken steps to enhance security for its citizens abroad and sporting events involving Israeli teams in Europe. The incident has prompted concerns in France regarding an upcoming match between the French and Israeli national soccer teams.
