Fewer Americans trust the food on grocery shelves than at any point in Gallup's tracking. A Gallup poll on food safety confidence published Oct. 8 found that 65% of U.S. adults are very or somewhat confident that food sold in grocery stores is safe to eat, down from 73% last year.
Trust in the federal government's role fell further. Only 47% said they have a great deal or fair amount of confidence in the federal government to ensure the safety of the food supply, a record low in a trend dating to 1999. That figure peaked at 85% in 2004.
