Americans Are Buying Hybrids At A Record Pace. And It's Not Just Toyota Anymore

Hybrids are getting more and more popular in the U.S. Much of that simply comes down to more automakers expanding their hybrid lineups, but Americans are also warming to the idea of electrification. High fuel prices and improvements in charging infrastructure have are helping people warm up to the idea of alternative fuels. With all of that, hybrids have the highest market share they've ever had, at 16.3% of the U.S. market, according to new data from Cox Automotive. While Toyota is still America's hybrid king through Q2 of 2026, two other brands saw surprising growth: Kia and Subaru.

Toyota still dominates the hybrid segment with 44% market share through Q2, despite dropping 4% from last year. That should come as no surprise, as Toyota practically invented the space. The Prius is still the most famous hybrid on the planet. However, another big reason why Toyota owns this segment is that it turned two of America's most popular models into hybrids exclusively; the Camry and RAV4. So now the zillions of people who buy those two cars have to buy hybrids.

The big surprise is Kia, though. Its share of the hybrid market is only 9%, but it saw a massive 130% year-over-year hybrid growth in Q3. That's in no doubt helped dramatically by the arrival of the new Telluride Hybrid. The Telluride is one of Kia's most popular models and the new hybrid model is arguably the best value in the lineup. The launch of that model last quarter had to have been a massive help, and likely will continue to bolster Kia's hybrid sales for many years to come.

Subaru was behind Kia in terms of market share, with just 4%, but it saw even more proportional growth than Kia, with a 140% year-over-year improvement. That's coming from a low base, as Subaru had zero hybrids in 2024. It has since launched hybrid versions of the Forester and Crosstrek, with Wilderness versions coming, too.

American is clearly buying into electrification and Hybrids are a great gateway, as they allow customers to taste the benefits of it, without having to make a complete lifestyle change over to charging. Hybrids are more convenient for long range driving, too, so they work better for many families. Outside factors like high fuel costs have only further fueled customers' curiosity into electrification, so we should only see these numbers rise in the coming months and years.
