An American fast food chain is set to open its second branch in Wales. The opening of a second Popeyes fried chicken restaurant in Cardiff has been confirmed just months after the capital's first branch arrived in the city centre.
Cardiff Council has received an application for Popeyes signs outside what was formerly the branch of Pizza Hut in Cardiff Bay Retail Park on Ferry Road. The plans also show the layout of the inside of the restaurant which will include a drive-through section.
The opening for the new branch, which will be Wales' first Popeyes drive-thru, is set to be late summer. You can see pictures from the St John Street branch, which opened in March, here.

Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes® UK, said: “After the success of our first opening in Cardiff this March, we’re thrilled to announce that a drive thru restaurant will also be landing in the Welsh capital this summer. Our St John St opening saw queues from the early hours, and we’re expecting to see the same in our drive thru lanes at our second site in Cardiff Bay.
"We launched our first drive thru into the UK last month in Rotherham, which was the biggest opening Popeyes has ever seen, not just in the UK but globally. We’re continuing to build new drive- thrus across the UK, the Sixfields site will shortly be followed by Cardiff Bay and Barnsley this summer and our first in Scotland later this year.”
Plans submitted to Cardiff Council for the new branch show indoor seating as well as a drive-through, with bright orange external Popeyes signage. In 2022, the council approved signage plans for a KFC at the site, which appears not to be going ahead.
Founded in Louisiana over 50 years ago, Popeyes offers a selection of chicken products including fried chicken sandwiches, hot wings and tenders and more. In 2019 its chicken sandwiches made the headlines after going viral online. The new restaurant willl also be serving a new breakfast menu that includes Big Breakfast Rolls, a variety of sausage, bacon, egg and cheese muffins, Cajun hash browns and, for those with a sweet tooth, Louisiana buttermilk biscuits served with cinnamon sugar or Nutella.
Popeyes chicken is served in more than 4,000 restaurants worldwide including locations in Cardiff, London, Newcastle and Liverpool. It's one of several American chains to come to Cardiff in recent months, with fast food outlet Wingstop joining the ranks on Chippy Lane at the end of May.
